Being one of the most important cities of the First Age, Larisa was established on a low plain behind today’s Buruncuk Village on the edge of a small hill at the end of a chain of mountains located to the north of the Gediz river.

There are some small towns named as Larisa or Larissa in Greece and Western Anatolia, which were established by the local people called the Pelasgs, who most probably lived in the Aegean Region before the Greek Migration. However, the City of Larissa in Western Anatolia was first mentioned in the Iliad of Homer.

The term “Larisa” means “City of Sand” in the Pelasg - Luwi language. The common characteristic of all the cities carrying the name of Larissa was that they gained importance with the fertility of their lands since their soil consisted of alluvial deposits brought by rivers.
