Located 50 km to the south of İzmir, Claros is presumed to have been constructed by Kolophon for the god Apollo during the 7th Century and the beginning of the 6th Century B.C.
The Apollo Temple constructed with the Dor style, which is located in the city of Claros, used to be world-famous with its prophets with secret powers and its sacred road leading to the Temple. Characterized as the famous center of prophecy of the Ancient Age, Claros has been entirely revealed with the excavations realized since the beginning of the 20th century.
Even though the word “Claros” meant “Attraction of Fortune” or “Land” in Ancient Greek, Bilge Umar states that its original root comes from Kalara, which means “Coast” or “Pier” in the Luwi language. The poets of the era wrote numerous praises about this place, known as the Sacred Place of Apollo, by defining it as the “Luminous Claros”.
